For more than 25 years, cadets from 296 Squadron have held a ceremonial guard at the Cenotaph in Galt the night before Remembrance Day. It is a well- respected tradition in Cambridge. In 2022, cadets from 296 City of Cambridge RCACS will be proudly participating in several events to honour this time of rememberance, and to those we owe so much too.

DRUMHEAD SERVICE– Sponsors and Commanding Officer invite you to attend our Drumhead Service, to be held at Knox Church ( beside the Cenotaph in Galt).  This will begin at 7pm on Nov 10.  It will last approx. 45 minutes.  It will allow all cadets and guests to pause to reflect.  It is a terrific ceremony to attend, and would be a worthwhile event to be there if you are unable to make the following days Remembrance Parade.

The Drumhead harkens back several centuries, when armies were battling across vast landscapes.   When they paused, to bury the dead, or to mark solemn ceremonies, often times they were not near a building or a church.    The drums would be piled, covered in their flags, forming a platform or an altar.   We’re harkening back to that time, piling our own units drums and flags as we fall silent to remember.

At the end of the event, we will ask guests to gather outside for the posting of the Vigil guard.

VIGIL – immediately following the Drumhead ( at about 2000h or so)  a ceremonial guard will be posted, a vigil to watch over the Cenotaph in the evening leading to the formal Remembrance Parade.

REMEMBRANCE PARADE – All 296 Cadets and staff will be out at the Parade in the Galt Section  of Cambridge.   Some cadets have been asked by their schools to carry Wreaths ( they will do so and then fall back in with the Squadron.)     Cadets must be down at the Armoury at 0900h on  11 Nov.   We will march as a unit down to the Legion, and when the event is complete, will march back to the Armoury for dismissal.  296 Squadron, flags flying, drums beating, pipes playing, with a hundred or so cadets on parade is a sight to enjoy.

In addition, Cadets from 296 will be participating in the Poppy campaign, and in the Remembrance Parade in Ayr Ontario.

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend the most recent Drumhead Service, or that visited during the Vigil, or that participated in the Rememberance Parade.    296 Cadets and Staff are very proud of their hard work during this time of remembrance.
