Wearing the Poppy

The Poppy is a powerful symbol of Remembrance. Across Canada millions of Canadians wear a poppy to remember those who served and sacrificed at their nations call.

Poppies are authorized for wear on your uniform from the last Friday of October until the end of Remembrance Day, November 11th.

In general, a poppy is worn “above one’s heart” on the left hand side. Generally, if you are wearing an article of clothing that has breast pockets, it is worn on the flap above your left breast pocket. If you have a medal hanging there you would place the poppy above the medal.

For any other article of clothing, such as a windbreaker jacket the poppy should be worn in the approximate location of where a left breast pocket would be.

One notable exception is that Cadets wearing FTU clothing with a front rank slip-on shall wear the poppy on the top of the rank slip-on which is centered in the front of the jacket. I

Recruits in white shirt / dark pants would wear it following these guidelines- placing on their left side over their heart. If wearing a suit jacket it would go on the lapel.

On their civilian jacket / sweater it should be worn on the left side. The goal is to show proper respect and reverence, and not damage clothing – putting the poppy as best possible on the left side so as not to damage the waterproof shell or other materials like leather. That may mean putting the poppy along the left size
